Second Grade
The second grade students begin their school year exploring warm and cool colors. The students also study actual and implied texture. As artists, the students combine the two elements and complete a true masterpiece artwork of a red bird sitting on a tree branch.
The second graders are pre-assessed as to their knowledge of the warm and cool colors and texture. We practice strategies for identifying and understanding what colors are warm and cool each class period. We discuss actual textures and implied textures. (Tactile and visual textures.) We post assess to track growth. The students complete reflections in regards to what they did well and enjoyed in the project. The students comment on something interesting they learned in the process of creating the collage.
The next project for students focuses on the artist Stuart Davis. The students study how Davis used color and shape and design artworks that include their name in the style of Stuart Davis.
The students pre-assess their knowledge of geometric and organic/free-form shapes. During class periods while creating the artwork, students select and design with the shapes in their works. They discuss at their tables and pair-share regarding the use of the shapes. We then post-assess for growth of their knowledge. In "artist statements" the students discuss what warm and cool colors they chose to use and they discuss their favorite organic and free form shapes used.

The students then transition to a lesson on castles!!!! YES! These are "pop up" castles! They learn how to draw a castle and review the parts of a castle and architecture. The students also collaborate and explore why communities needed and used castles. The students then design castles and incorporate texture into their drawings. The students pair warm and cool colors for contrast! The students then add color and details to the castle to make it into a fantasy castle of expression!!!!
The students pre-assess their understanding of pattern and texture for this project. We use strategies for creating visual and tactile texture during class periods. The students are post assessed regarding their growth and understanding. The students complete "Two stars and a wish" reflection on the artwork. This is sharing two things they are proud of in their creativity and then imagine something they wish they had thought of for their creation.

Students have viewed the work of Wassily Kandinsky and how his circles communicate emotions. The students created their own emotional circles with oil pastels! The students listened to classical music as they worked and their favorite song is Claire de Lune. The children love sharing what emotions their works convey.
The students worked very hard to create balance in their art. They set their works on a large easel and stood back and assessed the work with friends. They discussed which circles were standing out too much and how to create balance in the artwork.

Students work on projects called "Dot Creatures". The students make random dots on their paper and then connect the dots. They sit back and let their imaginations take over. They then finish the artwork making it into what their creative minds saw. This has been so fun and rewarding!
The second grade students have moved on to learning about Eric Carle!!! We love his work and they are creating and designing their own paper. The students will use the paper to create Eric Carle inspired animals in his style. Their amazing animals are in progress!!! As true artists, the children are deciding to either create their background first, or their animal first. They practice how to draw their creature and then look at how Eric created his. It is a stunning event to watch the students assemble their creatures with the paper they design! The second graders have done an amazing job!!!
The students pre-assess their knowledge as to what collage is and means as a process of art. They have used it three times now this school year. We study and discuss it as a method used by Eric Carle and post assess their understanding at the end of the project. The students participate in a gallery walk viewing the work of the entire grade and they write "post it" comments on what they admire and stick it to the backs of the projects.

Preparing for a clay mask unit, the students worked with modeling clay and an oil based clay to plan and brainstorm project ideas. The students gain experience and receive a tutorial on how they could sculpt their mask. The tutorial includes building techniques. The students love having time to work and build their skills before we take on the actual mask project!
Up next....cities and towns with shapes. We learn how to create a city or town from a distance and then look at the work of Marc Chagall. Students then imagine themselves floating above their city as Chagall did in his works. The students then create themselves and they are added to the artwork floating above their city in inspiration of Chagall.
The second grade students then create still life artworks inspired by artist Van Gogh! After having so many interesting projects this school year, the second grade students continue with the creation of paper and tissue paper flowers. The students create backgrounds with oil pastels and then finish the still life with a flower and leaf creations of their own design. The students are excited to express their creativity!
The students finish the year by creating aboriginal hand art. The project is a riot! The students paint their hand and then stamp it on the paper. They then create a border and finish with dot painting and oil pastel.
The students listen to stories regarding aboriginal culture and art while they complete these artworks.
