Sixth Grade
The sixth grade students begin the school year working in their sketchbooks developing their skills in gesture and figure drawing. The students study human proportion and non verbal communication. The students then use their knowledge of the color wheel to plan ideas for an artwork inspired by the American artist Keith Haring. Students create original and unique artworks for display. I also incorporate personal interest and identity into this unit. We often mix Romare Bearden in with this unit as it is in depth and takes quite a bit of time for the students to complete this project. The students create an artwork that is personally relevant to them. They may collage their name or an image they love and incorporate a quote that resonates with them.
The pastel unit has been a huge success. Students choose an image that they are excited to create and have something to guide them as they focus on using oil pastels to blend.
The interdisciplinary Public Art unit the students study has multiple learning targets. The students explore the element of value in art. They learn how to shade with pencils creating various values. They discover how to make a sphere look 3D. The students then explore how to enlarge an image to scale with proportion. Finally, the students collaborate in creating a large artwork for public display.
Sixth grade students have been working on clay slab art! Students viewed slab sculpture created by various artists. The students then planned and designed their own slab sculptures. They used a variety of textures on their creations and then added different colored glazes.
The sixth graders create a graphic art project that used a multi medium approach. The students used their names to create a design and then we cut the artwork up and reconfigured it to create an abstract work. This was a great start to our abstract painting unit where the students create an abstract work of art. The students need a strategy to design an abstract composition.
The next project for the students will be abstract or non-objective paintings. Students may use canvas to paint on. The students will focus on a variety of techniques to express emotion through art. The students will be viewing multiple artists.
The students then move forward with one point perspective. The students begin with a wonderful sketch of a railroad. Then they use watercolor and pastels to finish the artwork. They experiment with watercolor and pastel techniques. So proud of the sixth grade students!!!!!
