Third Grade
The third grade students begin the school year with their sketchbook. The students learn about the different types of lines. The children design EXTREMELY CLEVER line designs. The artwork allows the students to combine, lines, shapes, patterns, and implied textures. The students then create a visual journaling project which includes information about themselves and incorporates their designs with color.
The third grade students began the next unit with the study of Henri Matisse. The students created mini sketchbooks and began planning and brainstorming interior spaces like that of Henri Matisse. Bold use of color and abstract flat shapes were used. When their plan was complete students transferred their ideas to watercolor paper. The students used marker and watercolor to add color and patterns.
The students work on landscapes inspired by Iowa Regional artist Grant Wood. The students explore one point perspective, distance, pattern, overlapping shapes, and stylized landscapes. The students then create an artwork that incorporates background, middle ground, foreground, horizon line, and the style of Wood. The students use oil pastel to create the work.
The students then move on to the bookmaking arts. The students begin their exploration by creating books which focus on re-imagined tall tales and myths or fairytales.
Third grade students learned how to make a clay bowl! The students created pinch pots and then sculpted body parts onto the animals to create the lovely creations you see below.
What's next? Franz Marc? Have you ever wondered who may have inspired the blue horse in the book illustrated by Eric Carle? Well.....it was Franz! Students will look at Franz's style and create paintings!
Students then move on to listening to Faith Ringgold speak about her work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9RKJleFdBU Faith Ringgold is an African-American female artist that grew up in New York. She was the first artist to create story quilts. The students read her story "Tar Beach" and then listen to her speak about her techniques. The students then plan their own story quilt inspired art pieces using fabric and their own stories. Below is a picture of Faith and one of her artworks. The students focus on ILLUSTRATING when they create the center of the artwork.
The students will study the Kuna Indian culture and art form of molas. The students will then create their own mola with black paper, construction paper and oil pastel.
The third grade students went on a field trip to the Figge Art Museum. They studied 4 specific works of art and then wrote fictional stories about them. They set a scene and made characters in the paintings come to life in their stories.
Finally, the children will make an artwork inspired by perspective. We draw using one point perspective!
